Mission Mustard

Avr 26, 2024

India recently launched Mission Mustard Collaborative initiative involving the Indian Ministry of Agriculture, Solvent Extractors Association of India and prominent agribusiness companies including Godrej and Adani Wilmar. It is aligned with the Indian government’s national Atma Nirbhar Bharat (Self-Sufficient India) policy. India is the world’s largest importer of vegetable oils and mustard oil is seen as a key component in increasing domestic production. Unlike soybeans and the oil palm, mustard is seen as an indigenous crop. The current production is around 7 million tons a year. The goal is to double this over the next five years. This will be done by increasing the production area by 50%. Through government incentives. The plan is to increase yields per acre by using superior seed varieties. Non-Government organizations such as Solidaridad are involved in provided technical expertise, and irrigation systems. The Israeli government is aiding farmers to grow the crop in arid regions such as Rajasthan.
