Castor oil is unique among all fats and oil as this is the only oil having a composition of 85% minimum of a hydroxyl, unsaturated C18 fatty acid-ricinoleic acid; a double bond in the 9-10 position and a hydroxyl group on the 12th carbon. This combination of hydroxyl group and unsaturation only occurs in castor oil. Castor oil has numerous applications in bio-based polymers, lubricants, cosmetic, pharmaceutical and manufacturing industries.
