Summer is the perfect time to take the pulse of the refined glycerine market and get ready for smart decisions in September. Discover below a summary of the last publication of Oleoline Europe – Refined glycerine prices remain high, with different grades starting to converge in value. August spot availability is tight, supporting firm prices across all qualities. Suppliers are holding their ground, while buyers hesitate, judging current offers too expensive. Availability may improve in the coming weeks, but most grades still face supply challenges. China – Prices remain mostly stable. Some producers may restart operations in the coming days or weeks, raising concerns of increased supply and potential price drops. Demand remains weak, with most buyers in a wait-and-see mode. USA – Strong demand, especially for bulk GMO grade, and tightening supply keep upward pressure on prices. With non-GMO tariffs from Malaysia and Indonesia at 19%, many buyers are securing volumes ahead of Q4, further tightening South-East Asian supply. While a few U.S. producers are offering selectively for year-end, most remain cautious, and buyers are reluctant to commit at today’s price levels. Global picture – With buyers mostly waiting and sellers holding firm, the refined glycerine market is in a holding pattern at historically high price levels. Last week, we had the pleasure of welcoming industry leaders and experts to Chantilly for the 8th edition of Oleoline’s Global Glycerine Conference.

The format of having only about 110 participants allowed for close interactions, rich discussions , and a shared sense of effort to find opportunities and take our industry forward.

● Key Highlights

Glycerine supply is suffering , largely due to evolving biodiesel economics.
Both the U.S. and European biodiesel mandates are undergoing significant regulatory shifts, aiming to integrate more sustainable feedstocks while cracking down on fraud.
The increase in glycerine supply expected for Q2 has yet to materialize — notably from regions like Brazil and Indonesia.

● On the demand side

We continue to see strong interest in crude glycerine , particularly from ECH manufacturers and glycerine distillers .
Despite rising barriers to entry — such as U.S. import tariffs and European sustainability norms (e.g., EU DR) — refined glycerine demand remains robust in all regions.
China is successfully defending a significant share of the market.

In an Olympic performance, HBI’s sustainability efforts are underscored by our Ecovadis rating, published in April. Our overall score was increased by 2 points, to 58/100. This means we are in the top tier of the companies participating into this program! Our environmental rating has risen from 50 to 70/100! Let’s continue our efforts to reduce our impact on the climate. Our sourcing policy has been deemed insufficiently sustainable, although we had been documenting our social and environmental responsibility. Glycerine market in China

Outside of Asia, there is a sentiment that China has been unusual inactive in the glycerine market. Oleoline’s report can help you understand what is really going on and prepare for the next phase of the market. The price of crude glycerine in China is currently stable to slightly bearish, down by about USD 5 per metric ton compared to two weeks ago. This is despite the recent heavy rains and floods in southern Brazil that have significantly disrupted supply chains and exacerbated port congestion at the origin. Additionally, Epichlorhydrin – ECH – prices have softened to around RMB 7000 per metric ton delivered. This price drop has led to reduced operating rates within the ECH sector, thus dampening the demand for additional glycerine. There has been a surge in imports of glycerine into China. Both crude and refined glycerine imports, increased by 15% in Q1 2024 compared to Q1 2023.
